Electric furnace transformers are primarily used in resistance furnaces and salt bath furnaces for heat treatment of mechanical parts, powder metallurgy sintering, and nonferrous metal smelting. They can also serve as power transformers for steelmaking electric arc furnaces. The capacity of these transformers is configured according to the size of the electric arc furnace and the specific smelting process, with voltage regulation ensuring process requirements are met.

Voltage regulation in electric furnace transformers is achieved through two methods: on-load voltage regulation and non-excitation voltage regulation. Large-scale electric furnace transformers with on-load voltage regulation operate without series reactors, while small and medium-sized transformers without excitation voltage regulation may include series reactors or operate without them. Transformers with series reactors adjust impedance through the input and removal of the reactor, whereas transformers without reactors adjust winding impedance by changing the connection method of the high-voltage winding.

Electric furnace transformers are specialized to match the working principles, load characteristics, and operational requirements of different electric furnaces. This includes transformers for AC electric furnaces, such as steelmaking electric arc furnaces, ladle refining furnaces, electroslag furnaces, submerged arc furnaces, and power frequency furnaces, as well as transformers for DC electric furnaces, including medium-frequency induction furnaces, silicon carbide furnaces, and graphitization furnaces.

Industrial electric furnace transformers are generally categorized into three main types: resistance furnace transformers, electric arc furnace transformers, and induction furnace transformers, each optimized for specific industrial and metallurgical applications.
